Lil Nas X reveals the secret to his success
And it’s not what you’d expect…
Lil Nas X is having a moment. His first release, the country/hip-hop hit ‘Old Town Road’, went viral and later became a multi-platinum record. His success earned him a host of award nominations and wins, including two Grammys. His highly anticipated second single, ‘Montero (Call My By Your Name)’ accumulated 46.9 million US streams in the first week it was released on 26 March 2021. Now fans are eagerly awaiting his debut album MONTERO due out this summer. All this and he’s only just turned 22.
But Lil Nas X doesn’t attribute all his achievements to talent and graft. In his recent interview with British GQ, he credited self-help books for increasing his self-confidence and helping him create “this moment” of success. The titles he mentioned included The Rose Effect: Eight Steps To Delivering the Performance of Your Life by Keana Henson, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, and The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Ruiz.
The musician’s favourite “self-discovery” book, though, is The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. “It teaches you to block out the things in your life that you don’t really care about,” he told writer Jamal Jordan. “Like, if I read a negative comment or whatever, I get to decide, is this important to me? Is this true? Is this not true? If it is true, then how do we make it untrue?”
If personal growth can lead to such a healthy mindset (not to mention such a fire career), then we’re in.
